Create a compelling cover letter.

  2. Why are you interested in the role?

  3. What relevant experience do you have?

Here’s your checklist to create a compelling cover letter:

  1. Format: Search online for the template you like; I don’t have a preference here other than simpler is better.

  2. Name & Contact info: List your name prominently at the top, along with your contact information, including phone, professional email, social media links such as LinkedIn profile

  3. To: Address the hiring manager when known.

  4. Content: Include three paragraphs, 1) What you like about the organization, 2) Why you are interested in the role - let your passion shine through, 3) Your relevant experience for the role and how this aligns with the company’s needs. 3-5 sentences per paragraph. Use keywords that align to the job posting. Be authentic.

  5. Proofread: Review for typos and grammar.

  6. Perspective: Read from a recruiter lens; how might they read this amongst a pile of resumes and cover letters? What will stand out?

  7. Once you have a base template that you like, you can easily update it for future customized cover letters.

Here’s a sample of what a compelling cover letter may look like:

Subject: Application for Technical Program Manager Position at [Tech Company]

Dear Hiring Team,

I am writing to express my interest in the Technical Program Manager position at [Tech Company]. As a passionate advocate for innovation and efficiency, I have been following [Tech Company]'s groundbreaking work in [specific technology or product area]. The company’s commitment to pushing boundaries and solving complex challenges aligns perfectly with my own values.

I am truly passionate about the Technical Program Manager role. I thrive in dynamic environments where I can bridge the gap between technical teams and business stakeholders. The opportunity to lead cross-functional initiatives, drive project execution, and foster collaboration excites me. I appreciate [Tech Company]'s emphasis on empowering TPMs to make strategic decisions that impact the entire organization.

Lastly, my experience uniquely positions me for success in this role. During my 5 years at a [Tech Company], I honed my ability to adapt quickly, wear multiple hats, and deliver results under tight deadlines. At the [Teach Company] where I spent 3 years, I led high-impact projects, streamlined processes, and mentored junior team members. I am confident that my blend of startup agility and corporate expertise will contribute significantly to [Tech Company]'s success.
