We can be intentional with our growth by having a career development plan and reviewing it regularly. How often is up to you, but I encourage reviewing the plan at least monthly and the actions weekly. As mentioned before, every career development plan should have six sections: Vision, Values, Assets, Career Path(s), Development Plan, and Actions. For your review, ask yourself these questions for each section and identify your key next actions.

1. 3-5 Year Career Vision: where are you on this trajectory? Does this vision still feel right? Are there successes you can celebrate? Or, failures to learn from?

2. Values: how are your current actions and career decisions aligning to your values? Do you want to make any adjustments?

3. Your Assets: have you added any new strengths, skills, experiences, knowledge, and network that you want to utilize in your future career?

4. Career Path(s): which career path are you on? Does it still accrue to your career vision? Are there any other options you want to consider or stay the course?

5. Development Plan: how are you developing these skills, knowledge, experiences, and network towards these career paths? What actions have you been taking and are there new ways to develop in these areas that you’d like to take action on? What feedback have you received that would prioritize some development areas over others?

6. Actions: which actions can you mark complete and which actions do you want to take in the next 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months to develop in your career?

Block time on your calendar each week, month, or quarter to review your career development plan, identify new actions, and put them in motion. If your aspirations change, change your plan. Have a mindset that you can achieve your career aspirations, set a clear vision, and take intentional action towards it.

You can have a thriving career by utilizing the career decision framework to assess and align to your values, purpose, vision, beliefs, career decision criteria, and career development plan to decide what you want to do and then constantly review your career development plan to continuously grow and thrive in your career!
