What does it take to find your next career step?

Finding your next career step may be as straightforward as searching for jobs, updating your résumé and LinkedIn profile, and networking to land the interviews. Or, first, it may require exploration of what you really want to do as your next career step. Do you want to be in one industry vs. another? Do you want to be in one function vs. another? Do you want to be an individual contributor or a manager? Do you want to start your own business or work for an organization? There are so many options…

To explore your next career step, I take clients through exercises to identify your values and strengths, develop your purpose, clarify your vision, brainstorm career paths, and then decide on which path(s) to pursue. You can do these via 1:1 coaching or through my online program at your own pace.

Through this reflection, you’re able to get clear on what’s important to you now and in the future, to make an educated decision on the career path that you’d like to pursue.

Then, you can start the job search, start networking, updating your résumé, updating your LinkedIn profile, and prepping for interviews. I help clients navigate this process end to end and hold them accountable to get the momentum they want towards their next step.

To go through this reflection and job search process, though, you need three things: 1) belief that the job is out there for you, 2) persistence, and 3) patience. The job market is tough right now; there’s barely enough jobs for everyone looking. You have to believe that the job is out there for you and that you’re going to land it. If you continually tell yourself that you’re never going to find anything, that’s exactly what you’ll get, nothing. But the power of believing the job exists motivates you to keep up the job search and keep up the networking until you land it. You have to take intentional action daily, whether it’s networking, job search, applying, or all of the above. The rejection notices start to pile up and your mindset starts to be tested, really trying your patience and positivity. Know that rejection is a big part of the process. Be patient, positive, and persistent and keep going at it each day. Prioritize networking, then job search. One day, you’ll get asked to interview and before you know it, you’ll be onboarding into a new role.

With reflection and exploration, belief, persistence, patience and a lot of networking and interview preparation, you’ll find your next career step!
